Samuel Pegge was born 5 November at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was educated at Chesterfield and St. John's College, Cambridge from where he graduated BA in 1725 and MA 1729. Pegge was ordained in 1729, became curate at Sundridge, Kent in 1730 and the vicar of Godmersham, Kent in 1731. From 1749 to 1751 he lived in Surrenden, Kent as tutor to the son of Sir Edward Dering. Hayman Rooke (1722-1806) was an antiquarian and artist who explored the Roman ruins near his home at Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire and published articles and notes in various scholarly publications.
